THE HONOURABLE GILLES LÉTOURNEAU
  

Born in St-Michel, Bellechasse County, Quebec. Education at Laval University and at the London School of Economics and Political Science in London. Counsel for seven years with the Quebec Department of Justice and the Attorney General; Associate General Secretary of the Quebec Government and Secretary of the legislative Committee; Vice-Dean, Director of Undergraduate Studies and professor in the Law Faculty of Laval University; Practised law in Quebec for five years; Quebec editor of the Canadian law report "Criminal Reports",1977-1985. Appointed President of the Law Reform Commission of Canada on July 5, 1990 after having served as Vice-President for 5 years. Appointed Queen's Counsel in 1991. He is the author or co-author of some eighty texts, reports or articles connected with the law, legislation, the administration of justice and reform. Appointed Judge of the Federal Court of Canada, Appeal Division and ex officio member of the Trial Division, and Judge of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada on May 13, 1992. Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry into the Deployment of Canadian Forces to Somalia on March 20, 1995.
